Stair Lighting, Tips and Photos to help you choose your fixtures
Stair Lighting is an important area of your home that needs careful consideration and illumination to ensure that you and your family can walk in both safety and comfort. Modern Recessed-Lighting Design means that fixtures such as Step Lighting are now fashionable design elements of your home lighting layout, not just fixtures that merely “Light the Way.”
They are now more aesthetically pleasing than they ever were before. Models and Styles Available Square-Recessed-Lighting, Round or Oblong with regard to the shapes available are the most popular but also on the market are oval shaped fixtures and even diamond shaped fixtures. They come as battery operated versions, mains power operated, they even come with motion sensors so that the light activates when a person passes a motion detector, usually an infra-red-light or a motion pad under foot. Very cool I think you will agree:-). Below is a photo of these types of fixtures in action. As you can see the in this instance do a good job of illuminating the stairway so the family concerned will be able to use it in safety.

A Motion sensor comes recommended but I advise that you at least have a light switch installed at the foot of the stairs and also one at the top. Some people opt for sensor pads on the stairs themselves so that when someone steps onto the first stair (whether it be top or bottom) the sensor pad will detect this and the lights will automatically illuminate. Light Bulbs? LED Light bulbs are one that I would definitely recommend and are much preferred over the more common Incandescent Light Bulbs. LED`s although initially are more expensive usually than incandescent bulbs they last much longer (up to ten years or more n some cases) , they are much cooler, therefore safer, and are not prone to breaking easily unlike incandescent bulbs which are. Installing Your Stair-Lights
Installing Recessed Lighting. The best place to install your stair lights is in the “Riser.” As the name suggest the riser is the part of the stairway that is vertical, that faces you unlike the step itself (or tread) which one steps onto to walk up or down. Like most Recessed Lighting Spacing it is just a matter of personally taste but most people space their fixtures equal distances apart but really it all down to personal taste. Stair-Lights-Choice. When it comes to actually installing the fixtures this will depend on the type you have purchased. For example you can buy color changing LED Stair-Lights with a plug-in transformer. These are particularly good for Outdoor- Step-Lighting but also good to use indoors. They can be operated by a remote control, hand held similar to a TV Remote Control which I think you will agree are great for impressing friends and hold great novelty value:-). Installation is Quite Simple Installing Your Fixtures. You simply drill a hole to the desired diameter depending on the diameter of Stair Lighting you purchase. You then thread the wiring through at each hole on each step and then connect each one to the transformer, then plug the transformer to the mains electricity supply. One thing to remember is that if you are fitting Outdoor Step Lighting do ensure that the transformer is tucked well away to avoid damp and wet getting in, the same with the wiring too. Lighting Store. They will supply you with a comprehensive Installation Guide but once again we do highly recommend that employ the services of a qualified electrician to install your Stair Lighting. In the photo below you will see an excellent example of office stairway lighting. The stairs are very well lit and are probably illuminated by Recessed Ceiling Lighting, Wall Lights, possibly recessed along with the stair lights themselves. Commercial premises are strictly governed by Health and Safety hence the Stairway in this case is more than adequately illuminated.
