Solar Hybrid Lighting, A Relatively New Kid On The Block Has Arrived.

Solar hybrid lighting combines solar powered lighting with traditional electric lighting so that when the sun goes down your lighting “does`nt go down with it”.. (if you will forgive the pun:-).

Solar hybrid lighting, as mentioned previously, is a very clever form of lighting that makes use of both solar energy and electricity. Using fiber optics the light is directed straight into the room making it more efficient and more reliable.

Does Solar Powered Lighting Have Any negatives?

The only real downside of conventional solar powered lighting, I am very pleased to say, is that when the solar light levels run low (when the battery runds down) the light emitted from the bulb(s) gradually diminishes, or turns off altogether.

This applies to all lighting fixtures. in this category, some examples being solar walkway lighting, solar lamp post lighting, cheap solar lighting, solar step lighting and so on.

When this occurs, where hybrid solar lighting is concerned, the electricity system (back-up-system), kicks in powering the light bulb, making the fixture altogether more efficient keeping down-times to a bear minimum, if there are anyat all.

In the photograph below you will see how this form of lighting is used to power the lighting system in a house. The very large solar panels. soak up the suns rays during the day which is then converted to bring energy in the form of lighting to the home.

Although still in its infancy it is`nt hard to see why solar hybrid lighting could easily catch on But there is another addition to the mix that will please even more the “eco-friendly” folk among us.

Enter stage left…

Wind Power!

There is a company in France by the name of “Windela” (a delightfully catchy name I think you will agree). This terrific company have built a street lighting system () named the “Windelux..”

The Windelux is powered by a combination of wind turbine and solar power. As with many solar powered lighting fixtures these little beauties switch on and off automatically by light sensors that detect when it is dark, and off when darkness falls but because they combine two sources of energy provider they are highly efficient.

The wind power “component” works by way of curved blades which spin by power of the wind which creates energy to power the LED light bulbs that the lighting fixture is equipped with. Because the energy used is complete renewable this truly is one eco-friendly lighting fixture:-).

Because solar hybrid lighting is still relatively new these types of lighting fixtures are mainly used in the commercial sector but in time it is predicted that they will be quite commonplace in the residential home (particularly where outdoor lighting is concerned).

In the next photo below is an example of solar panels which are set on a hillside. Solar panels of this size are usually used in the commercial field but some large homes also use them harnessing the power of solar lighting.

Some Important Facts About Lighting From The US Department of Energy

  • lighting consumes on average more energy than air conditioning in U.S. homes
  • Lighting is the second-highest contributor of carbon dioxide emissions from building energy use, representing about 7 percent of total emissions
  • The heat given off by indoor lights increases the amount of air conditioning used in homes and commercial buildings by as much as 27 percent

As you can see there are a few eye-openers in the above list but the main thing to remember is that we should all try to conserve energy the best we can and by doing things like changing to solar lighting and using LED light bulbs we can all say that we are doing our bit to help the environment.

I do hope that you have found this page of interest. Please keep an eye on this website and web-page as we will be bringing further updates and important information regarding hybrid solar lighting and other lighting fixtures very soon but particularly how it will affect the home lighting industry.
