Retro Lighting Such As Art Deco Lighting Fixtures. Timeless And Exquisite.
Retro Lighting covers a wide range of lighting fixtures from beautiful art deco lighting, to antique lighting, to Victorian lighting, the list is very long but I really love them don`t you:-).
What Is Retro? The word “Retro” comes from Latin and means “Backwards” or “Past Times.” So, anything that is`nt contemporary or modern could fall into this bracket really. Many people though refer to retro as things that were around in the 60`s, but in general this word can mean anything old fashioned or might be referred to as: “in the past.” Their Own Unique Appeal Retro Lighting like a delightful Victorian table lamp or a quaint old fashioned antique chandelier are all unique and each have their own appeal and attraction. The condition can have a strong bearing on the price, the better the condition, in the main, the more expensive the item. One such example can be seen below. This beautiful gold lighting fixture would add sparkle to any home and although old fashioned in design is, as you can see, in immaculate condition.
Victorian Lighting
Victorian lighting fixtures began an era of exquisite artistic design in many peoples opinion and fixtures such as the Victorian pendant light and Victorian carriage lantern really were years ahead of their time in both design and elegance. Reproduction “Repro” lighting has lots going for it in my opinion. Not only are there many designs and models to choose from but the copies (reproduction models) that are on the market today are almost exactly like the real thing. It would be difficult to tell the genuine models apart from the reproduction ones unless you were fortunate enough to have a trained eye. With reproduction models of course you do get the kudos factor knowing that you own the real thing and not merely a copy. But there are other advantages of going down the reproduction route. I have listed some of these below:- - Many Varying Styled And Designs To Choose From
- Parts/Components Are More Readily Available
- Ability To Buy Matching Sets
- Better Condition (usually)
- Finishes That Match Modern Decors
- Last But Not Least – Cheaper To Buy Than Originals:-)
In the photo below you will see a very attractive old fashioned 5 light bronze chandelier. As you can see this one is an original hence the condition which is slightly worn. This is always a good way judging the age of a lighting fixture. Reproduction versions are usually always in perfect condition.
Retro lighting in the form of ”art deco lighting” is a lighting fixture I really love don`t you:-). Art deco table lamps for example are very collectible and endearing and can be purchased fairly cheaply. Other than the condition of the fixture another factor governing the price would be the designer.
Lava Lamps Lava lamps are synonymous with retro and the 60`s and 70`s. With their mesmerising coloured lighting effects every home had at least one of these beauties in the 60`s, 70`s and you were`nt really classed as “cool” unless your family owned one. Originals can still be picked up quite cheaply but modern day versions are just as good and probably less costly too. Below is pictured a delightful example of lava lamps. Beautiful I think you will agree:-).
Retro lighting will certainly add a touch of class to your home evoking memories of times gone by but the main question you will need to answer is whether you will want to buy original models as opposed to reproduction ones.
Personally I prefer reproduction models as they have so much going for them. It is really just a question of personal taste but whatever version you decide to opt for I am sure you will have lots of fun and you and your family will enjoy your retro lighting for many years to come.
