Art Deco Floor Lamps, From an Era where Artistic Style and Design was at Its Superb Best

Art Deco Floor Lamps, are one of the most elegant and adaptable forms of art deco lighting there is. With their close family members, art deco table lamps and art deco chandeliers, the family of art deco lighting fixtures are objects of beauty that we love and cherish and still find so appealing to this day.

Art Deco Floor Lamps sometimes known as ”art deco torchieres” come in lots of different designs and styles but the principle behind them in general remains the same in that they usually come on a tall stand, the stem or shaft is made of metal or wood or various other materials and they stand upright.

Movable and Adaptable

As with art deco table lamps the great thing about this art deco lighting fixture is that it can be moved from room to room unlike say art deco chandeliers for example which are fixed to one spot on the ceiling.

Because they are portable they are particularly good if like me you change your room around a lot, and having a weighted base also ensures that there is less risk of accidental damage, if like me that is you also happen to be a bit accident prone:-).

In the delightful photograph below you will see a charming “lady lamp” I hope you like it:-) .

Illustrious Designers

There were many great designers of art deco floor lamps during the 1920`s and beyond. Some are listed below. If you come across any pieces by these expert artistic designers I am sure that like me you will be in awe and wonder at their artistic talents.

  • Kurt Versen
  • Walter Von Nessen
  • Edward Schnorr
  • Donald Deskey
  • Atelier Petitot
  • Edgar Brandt
  • Jean Gay
  • Georges Leleu
  • Loys Lucha

Is it Real or Make Believe?

One thing to be careful of is imitations being sold or portrayed as the genuine article.

Most people are honest but there is always the rogue or dishonest person that we need to be on our guard against which applies to many walks of life not just art deco objects d`art.

If in doubt buy through a recognised dealer and try to get an evaluation done by a professional if you can.

In the second photo below is a beautifully ornate art deco floor lamp with an upper bowl (or shade) typical of the day.

Materials?

As with art deco table lamps, art deco floor lamps come in a number of materials including the following: Nickel, Chrome, Brass, Steel and Wrought Iron. The shades can be found to be made of Frosted or Clear Glass, Murano Glass, Enamel, Silks and other materials.

Did You Know?

"Art Deco" in all forms can be very collectible and it is`nt hard to see why.

A small leather art deco armchair designed by Eileen Gray (world renowned designer from Southern Ireland) sold for an incredible $28.1 million!

The most expensive table lamp? "Lotus Lamp" by Louis Comfort sold for a comparatively measly $2.8 million:-).

In the final photo below is a lovely art deco floor lamp next to a fine column. This type of art deco lighting fixture could often be found gracing an art deco cinema or similar building built in the 1920`s or 1930`s.

If you are looking to buy original models with a view to perhaps collect to sell at a profit at a later date, keep an eye out for matching sets of say a floor lamp and a table lamp as this is what collecters seek out and pay good money for.

As mentioned earlier though, do make sure that what you are buying is the real thing and not a fake and if in any doubt get a second opinion from a certified valuer as it may save you a lot of money in the long run.

The explosion of wonderfully quirky shapes, weird and wonderful designs and colours brought a whole new world to us which we should be eternally grateful for.

There is no doubt that our world became a much nicer place when this beautiful art form emerged.
