Victorian Lighting Fixtures, Classic Lighting From the Reign of Queen Victoria.

Victorian Lighting Fixtures, in their original form, are from the reign of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria reigned England from 1837 to 1901 which was a prosperous time for the people of England.

It is hard to imagine how life must have been during the period. Candles were the main source of light but Oil Lamps were also used later.

Wealthy folk (the Aristocracy for example) would have fancy chandeliers or wall lights to light their homes and in the latter Victorian Years Gas Lighting was popular and electricity was gradually coming to the fore.

Elaborate Ornate Chandeliers were highly prized, and in this era if your family owned one of those you were to be considered quite posh and rather well off.

In modern times, because of their high regard and value, if you own an original Victorian Lighting Fixture you might still come into the “well off” category as the price of originals can command many hundreds and sometimes even many thousands of dollars.

Fascinating fact!

The World`s biggest Bohemian Crystal Chandelier, a gift from Queen Victoria, is located in the Dolmabahge Palace in Istanbul, Turkey. The Chandelier has 750 lights, weighs over 4 tons and is a stunningly beautiful piece according to those that have viewed it in person. Now that chandelier must take SOME cleaning!

Although it is mainly true that Victorian Lighting Fixtures can command top prices one can still pick up originals at around $300 to $400`s. My advice would be to definitely “shop around” if you are searching for originals as the savings can be substantial from dealer to dealer.

As with most home lighting fixtures try to match your fixtures with existing finishes in your home. If you have for instance a bookshelf with gold inlay then it is best to opt for Gold finished fixtures And so on..

Of course if one goes down the Reproduction route one can save even more money, albeit at the added expense perhaps of not being able to tell your friends and family proudly: “It is an original you know!”
