Light Bulbs, May seem complicated but please read on for some Important Facts and Details.
Light Bulbs come in a diversity of disguises and sizes and there are many on the market today. Knowing which ones to choose can often be confusing, frustrating and sometimes bewildering.
Hopefully, our guide will help you avoid making costly mistakes and may help to make the process of knowing what to buy somewhat easier. A selection of commonly used bulbs are pictured below:-

Lighting Tips:- - Turn Lights Off When Your Room is not in Use
- Replace Bulbs Like Incadescents with Energy Saving Ones like LED`s
- Use Dimmer Switches or Timers to Control your Indoor and Outdoor Lighting
- Use Solar Led Lighting Outdoors
**By simply following the above friendly tips you will save yourself money year on year, and you will also be helping the environment in the process:-)
Choose Energy Star CFL`s (Compact Fluorescent Bulbs) In campirson to Incadescent Bulbs they use one quarter of the energy. This means that a 15 watt CFL will emit the same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent. It will also last up to ten time longer and use up to 70% less heat. A fortune has literally been saved by simply swapping bulbs as described above. Please read below a passage from the Energy Star advsory website: In 2007, Americans saved $1.5 billion by switching to ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs. The energy saved could light all the households in a city the size of Washington, DC for over 30 years. Put another way, changing these bulbs removes as much greenhouse gas pollution as planting 2.85 million acres of trees or taking 2 million cars off the road each year. "Various Bulb Types and their Descriptions"
Incandescent, are the most common, but they are slowly being "outshone" by relatively new kids on the block such as the following:-
- Compact Fluorescent
- Halogen
- Led
The above three are all very energy efficient and will save you money, long-term, if you use them in your lighting fixtures. Some other types:- Incandescent-Light-Bulbs
incandescent-light-bulbs Commonplace at one time but are slowly being replaced by more energy efficient types. They work by way of a filament which produces a glow. The downside of this type is that most of the energy gets lost and they are prone to blowing so have a rather short life. Energy-Efficient-Bulbs
energy-efficient-bulbs Have been transformed in both appearances and usage over the years. Many appliances both in and out of the home can now use these and it won`t be too long before dinosaurs such as the incandescent bulb will be made extinct by the rapid technological progress of energy efficient ones.
Weird-Light-Bulbs
Halogen-Light-Bulbs
halogen-light-bulbs Produce a very bright light but tend to get very hot, much hotter in fact then incandescent ones. They tend to be found in automobiles and motorcycles. Fluorescent-Light-Bulbs
fluorescent-light-bulbs Use a combination of argon gas and mercury. Compared to the good old incandescents they are very efficient because they use less heat. Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL`s) are now very popular and can be found in most modern homes, such is their success. "Some Fascinating Facts"
- The light bulb was invented in 1879 by Thomas Alva Edison
- In the UK alone £140 million is wasted every year by leaving our lights switched on unnecessarily - this causes 900,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, enough to fill 180,000 hot air balloons!
- Each low energy light bulb you install in your home could save you as much as £9 per year in energy costs, or £100 over the bulb's lifetime.
- Energy efficient bulbs last up to 12 times longer than their inefficient counterparts
- If every UK household installed just three compact fluorescents in place of traditional bulbs, enough energy would be saved in a year to supply all street lighting in the UK
- UK households use £1.9 billion worth of electricity every year on lighting
Led Light Bulbs
led-light-bulbs At one time were only to be found in every day appliances such as the humble washing machine but once again technology has brought them on in leaps and bounds and it is not uncommon to see led light bulbs in the home. Xenon-Light-Bulbs
xenon-light-bulbs once again are mainly found in car headlamps, like halogen bulbs. But nowadays they can be found around the home in places such as bookcases, desk lamps etc. Car-Light-Bulbs
car-light-bulbs as mentioned above are usually halogen-light-bulbs or xenon-light-bulbs. One important thing to remember about this type of light-bulb is that you should avoid holding or touching the glass part of the bulb. If you hold them by the base they will last longer and will save you money in the long run. Below is a general guide to help you understand some associated terminologies Watts Are units of measure in electricity. One thing to look for when making your choice. Generally wattage starts at 5 - 15 watts and can go up to 100 watts or more. The higher the wattage the brighter the shine basically. Lumens These are the measures of light emitted. For example a basic 100 Watts emits approximately1600 lumens. Life Duration. The expected life time as such. Incandescent Work by a filament inside that heats up and produces a glow. Fluorescent Have mercury vapour inside which when electricity is applied produces a ultra-violet light.

Modern Advances Until recent times we were restricted as to which type of bulbs we could use in our every day appliances,(including lighting fixtures) but technology has moved on by leaps and bounds which means we now have a choice of energy saving, cost saving, choices to opt for, instead of the incandescent "dinosaurs!"
