Without going into lengthy technical detail of how they work the basics are that an electric current passes through a very fine filament which produces a glow. Two gases, Nitrogen and Argon are also involved in producing the desired light or glow. It is`nt hard to see why Incandescent-Bulbs will become extinct some day soon when you consider Fluorescent Light Bulbs for example) last around ten times longer at around 10,000 - 15,000 hours. With regard to when to upgrade and change your Incandescent Bulbs for other perhaps more energy efficient light bulbs, my advice would be to change them as soon as you can.
You can always keep your old Incandescent Light Bulbs as spares so the wastage long term will be minimal. As with most light bulbs, eg tungsten bulbs, care should be taken when handling them. In particular it is best to avoid touching the glass area but especially if your hands are dirty as this can damage the glass and make them unfit for use.
